Defunct Battery from ISS Hits Home in Florida

Something came out of the sky, punched through the roof of a house like it wasn't there, then crashed through the floor below into the basement. The homeowner's son was in the house at the time but wasn't hit.

About the same time the US Space Command was tracking the reentry of some orbital space debris and predicted it might come down about there.

It appears to have been batteries that astronauts have been swapping out for new lithium ion models. Several of these replaced batteries were on a pallet that seems to have just been released into space. Most of it probably burned up on reentry, but some of the bigger bits made it all of the way down.

Jonathan McDowell says

"The EP-9 equipment pallet reentered at 1929 UTC over the Gulf of Mexico between Cancun and Cuba. This was within the previous prediction window but a little to the northeast of the 'most likely' part of the path. A couple minutes later reentry and it would have reached Ft Myers."

The homeowner replied to Jonathan:

"Hello. Looks like one of those pieces missed Ft Myers and landed in my house in Naples.
Tore through the roof and went thru 2 floors. Almost hit my son.
Can you please assist with getting NASA to connect with me? I’ve left messages and emails without a response."

Apparently NASA finally replied and sent somebody around to collect the debris that crashed through the roof. They are trying to verify if it was part of their batteries. Hopefully they will stay in touch with the homeowner and will pay for repairs on his house.

I smell a lawsuit. Imagine trying to get your insurance company to pay for it.
