The Centennial Light

Meet the Centennial Light, the world's longest burning light bulb. It was switched on in 1901 and it's still going today in 2023, 122 years later!

It was originally a 30 watt bulb (or 60 watt, nobody is sure) and today is about 4 watts worth, like a nightlight.

It's in Livermore California and is cared for by the Centennial Light Bulb Committee, a partnership of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, Livermore Heritage Guild, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and Sandia National Laboratories.

That's amazing! I would drive out of the way just to see it!

I'm impressed that the simple, hangling light fixture is still holding up. It's not like they could ever replace it without the light going off.

It’s like a Twilight Zone prop, when it finally blinks out, the world isn’t quite the same. Time actually stops or all the humans on Earth turn into skunk cabbage and a couple of ET maintenance guys show up to change the bulb.
