Article  With “thanabots,” ChatGPT is making it possible to talk to the dead

KEY POINTS: ChatGPT is making it possible to digitally resurrect the dead in the form of thanabots: chatbots trained on data of the deceased. A program called Project December already allows users to input information about a person and have a custom chatbot created for them based on that person. As Facebook, Google, Apple, and Microsoft all store heaps of our digital communications, it's conceivable that they all could create and sell thanabots in the coming years.

EXCERPT: But there also could be downsides. After all, thanabots will only be based on digital data — at least at first. We all know that people’s online lives can be very different from offline, so the thanabot may not accurately represent the person it was made to mimic.

The person I am online and the person I am in my daily life are so different that you couldn't tell they are the same person. Online, as Magical Realist, I am an opinionated and subversive renegade ever in search of the profound truths and experiences that give my life meaning. In real life, and biographically speaking, I am but a passive and quiet simpleton, going thru my daily routines without rocking the boat for anyone. I recall someone observing that when they met Nietzsche he was a very polite and gentle soul. I long for the day MR will show up in my apt unannounced and visit with me. I could use a little "je ne sais quoi" from him! Maybe AI will provide that some day.

Wish I could say the same. Not that I'm going around trying to have deep discussions with everyone...but I'm a little spicey. I take that back. When I tried weed awhile back with by best friend, I did mention something about QM, but that was because of the slow time perception. She blinked, but she kept nodding politely. Gotta love her for that! I was also trying to make dinner and kept throwing away all my prep. Never again.  Blush

Sounds all good to me. I'm not far away from being the 'thing' that lives in the attic.

Worst part about it is that there might be other people nearby us who are doing the same thing, each unaware that the other talks about safe, banal things because they don't want to stand out as a weird, provocative, etc anomaly.

It's easier to attract nutters than to get rid of them. My policy is to respond at a polite level, nothing more - ppl are less likely to try to kill you after they've said "Good morning." - that has always worked for me (so far).
