Though a heavier desert setting and 1955 versus 1963, the opening service station scene faintly reminded me of the one in its It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, that Pike (Jonathan Winters) single-handedly demolished.

Me too! The set and it's colors reminds me of an old photoshopped 1960's postcard. I think that's what Wes was goin for here, sans the jackalope..
